As part of International Women’s Day which took place on 8 March we reached out to our community to gather thoughts on how we can #AccelerateAction in the photonics sector.
As we take the time to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women in this field, it’s vital we continue to champion inclusivity, support diversity, and ensure equal opportunities for all.
Check out part four of what our community shared with us below.

Emma Crothers, EngD Student
Queen’s University Belfast
“Increasing the visibility of the photonics sector is key to achieving greater inclusivity. Many talented individuals, particularly women, are unaware of the rewarding career and research opportunities in photonics due to a lack of exposure. Engaging with students at both secondary and undergraduate levels can demystify these opportunities and empower students from underrepresented backgrounds to pursue a career in photonics.”

Nikita Daga, Director
LaserQuant
“It is essential to promote cross-sectional (genders, cultures, beliefs) conversations and collaboration for better understanding and finding ‘allies’. Buddies or mentors at workplace have great positive impact to foster inclusion. I have benefitted greatly being a mentee as well as a mentor.”

Katherine Stevens, PhD Student
University of Glasgow
“Going into schools and keeping a good public engagement is important. Outreach events like Glasgow science festival are really good opportunities to go and explain what you do and inspire people to join your industry.”

Dr Nicola Black, Senior Scientist
AI Exploration
“Level the playing field by making maternity and paternity leave of equal length and compulsory. Normalise co-parenting and equal work life balances.”
